It is never to late to send a note/email/phone call/ text home.
Do it now. The email you have might be wrong, send it anyway. You don't know if their number is a home-line or cell, text it anyway. (Use your google voice account if you'd like). Nervous about talking to them on the phone, call anyway. (Use the school line and make sure you are calling to say something good about the child. If you can't think of anything good, maybe you should wait a day or two. If you can not ever think of anything nice, maybe you should not be a teacher.) You think the child is not going to show the parent the note, send it home anyway. (I bet if you send home a note that reads little Jo-Jo is the best at making the class smile, or the best helper, or the best question ask-er, the child will give it to the parent.) Maybe you have not sent anything home and it is the last two weeks, send something anyway. 'Tis the season for holiday cheer. And for some people, grades, projects, and final exams.
If you have not heard from your child's teacher this year, there may be for several reasons. Whatever they are, the important thing is that you communicate. Consider sending a short email to them at their school address. Feel free to use the suggestion below. It may seem silly in this age of texting, but learning at this age is still a triangle: Teacher, student, and parent. Short Version: Dear ( ), I am the ( ) of ( ) in your class. Thank you for taking care of ( ) this year. This is my current email account address that I would like you to use if you need any support in your classroom. Respectfully, ( ) Long Version: Dear ( ), I am the ( ) of ( ) in your class. Thank you for taking care of ( ) this year. ( ) and I had a conversation about your class and I wanted you to know hoe much s/he enjoyed your lesson on ( ). I appreciate the level of dedication you show by ( ). Please reach out to me if you need support in your class and I will do what I can to support your wonderful learning environment. Warmly, ( ) If you are feeling bitter about having to reach out. I get it. It is their job to do the teaching and the communication. However, teachers are human and have their reasons for doing what they have done. Maybe not good reasons, but as Dale Carnegie says: Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving. |
